EMPHASIS: Window Tinting: Against the law, or not?

Missouri State Statute allows for vehicles registered in Missouri to have windows to the immediate left and right of the driver tinted to 35%, plus or minus 3%. Windows behind the driver and the rear glass are not subject to tint limitations. The windshield is not to be tinted except that portion at the top, which is normally tinted by the vehicle manufacturer. If darker tinting is applied to the windows to the immediate left or right of the driver then a permit is required. The permit may be issued by the Patrol if the applicant has a written prescription from a physician.

Remember, window tinting is not an inspection item when having a vehicle checked for compliance during a safety inspection. It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure the tinting is in compliance with laws and tinting permits.

Once a permit is issued to the owner of a vehicle for tinted windows beyond the 35%, plus or minus 3 %, then the applicant must carry that permit at all times. A sticker will be affixed to the lower left corner of the windshield and the rear window of vehicle.

Troopers are equipped with tint meters that will gauge the percent of tint on questionable vehicle windows. If a window sticker is not visible and the window tint appears to be in violation then the trooper can initiate a vehicle stop. If window tinting permits are not in order and it is determined through the use of the tint meter that the windows are too dark enforcement action may be taken by the trooper. Questions concerning particulars of this law please contact you local troop public information officer.
