On Thursday, November 1, 2007, at approximately 4:35 p.m., members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department were called to respond to a reported airplane crash, approximately seven-tenths of a mile east of State Highway D, on Lewis County 245th Street. Upon arrival, officers found a single engine Zodiac 601XL Zenair airplane crashed in a field. At approximately 5:45 p.m., the pilot and sole occupant of the aircraft, Stevens L. Walker, 71, of Newark, Missouri, was pronounced dead by Lewis County Coroner Larry Arnold.
Preliminary information determined that minutes before the crash the airplane had departed from the Sharpe Farms Airport, approximately 2 1/2 miles southeast of the crash site.
Members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department will be securing the scene awaiting the arrival of the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board, who are expected to arrive on Friday, November 2, 2007, to complete the investigation.
The Lewis County Ambulance District, Lewistown Fire Department, Labelle Fire Department, and the Lewis County Coroner assisted the Patrol and the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department at the scene.
