EMPHASIS: Troop G Planning "Move Over for Emergency Vehicle" Operations
Captain B.E. Chadwick, Commanding Officer, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Troop G, Willow Springs, Missouri, announces that sometime during the month of November 2005, special operations focusing on compliance with the “move over” law will be conducted in Carter and Texas Counties.
On August 28, 2002, a law went into effect in the state of Missouri which protects police officers and other emergency responders working alongside Missouri roadways. The law requires motorists to approach cautiously when an emergency vehicle is stopped ahead with its lights flashing. Motorists must change lanes away from the emergency vehicle if they are on a multi-lane highway and can do so safely. If drivers can’t change lanes safely, or they are on a two-lane highway, they must slow down to a safe speed. A violation can result in fines.
Captain Chadwick says, “While we must strictly enforce the law, our main objective is to see people comply with this important law for the safety of troopers and other emergency responders. When you see emergency workers engaged in roadside duties, please slow down and move over if you can safely do so”.
