EMPHASIS:
Suspect Identified In Columbia Officer-Involved Shooting
At 6:25 p.m., on Saturday, May 13, 2017, Boone County Joint Communications received calls regarding a male subject threatening individuals and actively firing shots in the 100 block of Oak Street.
The suspect fired several shots at Columbia Police Department officers and Boone County Sheriff’s Department deputies as they arrived on the scene. The suspect fled the area on foot, and climbed onto a rooftop of a building in the 600 block of Garth Avenue where he fired more shots at the officers. A Columbia Police officer returned fire, striking the suspect.
The suspect was transported by ambulance to University Hospital in Columbia, MO, where he was pronounced deceased at 7:53 p.m. He has been identified as Clarence E. Coats Jr., 41, from Columbia, MO. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, May 15, 2017,
at University Hospital, in Columbia.
A Boone County deputy suffered minor injuries during the shooting. No one else was injured.
This investigation is ongoing by the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control.
