EMPHASIS: Officer Involved Shooting - Lincoln County, MO

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control is investigating an officer involved shooting, that occurred during the afternoon hours of Wednesday, July 29, 2026, on Pinewood Drive in Lincoln County, MO. The investigation is ongoing, and all information is preliminary.

During the morning hours of Wednesday, July 29, deputies with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a domestic disturbance involving an alleged assault at a residence on Pinewood Drive, in Lincoln County. Deputies initially made contact with a male, later identified as John R. Haynes, 69, of Winfield, MO, who they believed to be armed with a weapon. Haynes retreated into the residence and deputies established a perimeter. Haynes did not respond to attempts to contact him and the Patrol’s Troop C SWAT team was requested to respond by the Lincoln County Sheriff.

The Patrol’s Troop C SWAT team responded, and an arrest warrant was obtained for Haynes. Several attempts were made to contact Haynes throughout the morning hours and into the afternoon. While attempting to contact Haynes, he came to the front door of the residence with a firearm and pointed it at SWAT members on scene. An exchange of gunfire occurred between Haynes and members of the team in which a member of the SWAT team was struck in the ballistic helmet by gunfire. Haynes suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The SWAT member was evaluated on scene and was released with no injuries.

To maintain the integrity of the investigation, other specific details of the incident are not being made public. Further details of the incident will be shared as it becomes available and is appropriate to release. Upon completion of the officer involved shooting investigation, all investigative reports will be forwarded to the Lincoln County Prosecutor for review.
