EMPHASIS: Missouri State Highway Patrol Invites Media To Attend Outdoor Firing Range Groundbreaking Ceremony

The Missouri State Highway Patrol invites members of the media to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for its outdoor firing range from 2:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2020. The ceremony will take place at the construction site, which is located on Missouri Highway 179 north of State Surplus Property (right side of the roadway). A map to the location is included with this news release on the Patrol’s website. Governor Michael Parson will speak at the groundbreaking ceremony. Department of Public Safety Director Sandy Karsten, MSHP Colonel Eric Olson, and MSHP Fleet & Facilities Director Catherine Brown also will speak briefly.

Currently, the Patrol does not have an outdoor range and must utilize ranges owned by state or local agencies and, in some cases, private gun clubs. This results in scheduling difficulties and travel expenses. The new outdoor range will accommodate rifles, shotguns, and pistols. The facility will include a 50-person classroom, shoot house (concrete/ballistic structure that can be used for tactical live-fire training), bomb disposal area, and parking. The range will be utilized by the Patrol 20 weeks a year. It may also be utilized by other agencies receiving training at the Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy as well as those in the mid-Missouri area.

The Missouri Legislature appropriated funds for the range in the FY 2019 budget. The range will be constructed on property already owned by the state.
