December 1, 2025 Q12012025 EMPHASIS: Drive Safe In Winter Weather
Portions of Missouri have already been impacted by winter weather. With more winter weather impacting a significant portion of the state, the Missouri State Highway Patrol would like to remind travelers to practice safe driving behaviors.
Before traveling, pay attention to weather conditions and make smart decisions regarding travel. Motorists may check road conditions on MoDOT’s Road Condition Map. The MoDOT Traveler Information Map app can be downloaded for free to your smart devices. If conditions dictate, avoid driving on Missouri’s roadways.
If you are traveling, make sure you follow the safety behaviors below:
· Lower your driving speed if it is snowing or raining and roads are wet or icy
· Do not use cruise control if rain or snow is present
· Be aware of elevated roadways such as bridges or ramps that may freeze faster
· Leave at least five seconds between you and the vehicle in front of you
· Use your headlights to increase visibility
Troopers suggest keeping your fuel tank at least half full. In preparation for winter weather, place battery booster cables, blankets, extra coats, gloves, water, non-perishable food, an ice scraper, first aid kit, flashlight, small shovel, and a bag of sand or cat litter in your trunk now, before an emergency occurs.
Motorists may reach the Patrol emergency line by dialing *55 on a cellular phone. The nearest troop headquarters will receive your call and will be available to assist you. Do not use your cell phone when you are driving; park your vehicle off the roadway or in a parking lot before placing a call.
Please remember to buckle up, pay attention, be courteous, and obey all traffic laws. When weather conditions make driving hazardous, drive only when absolutely necessary.
