EMPHASIS: Captain Joseph L. Armistead Retires

Colonel Michael A. Turner, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces the retirement of Captain Joseph L. Armistead, effective August 1, 2026, after 24 years of dedicated service.

Armistead joined the Patrol on October 16, 2001, as a member of the 79th Recruit Class. Upon graduating from the Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy, he was assigned to Troop F, Zone 10, Boone County. He was promoted to corporal on May 13, 2007, and designated assistant zone supervisor of Troop F, Zone 3, Boone County. On October 14, 2007, Armistead transferred to the Training Division, General Headquarters, Jefferson City. He was promoted to sergeant on June 1, 2010, and remained assigned to the Training Division. Armistead was promoted to lieutenant and transferred to the Professional Standards Division on April 1, 2015. On October 1, 2017, he was promoted to captain and designated director of the Budget and Procurement Division. Armistead transferred to the Professional Standards Division and was designated as the director on July 1, 2018. He then transferred to the Training Division on July 1, 2020, and served as the director of the division.

Capt. Armistead was born in St. Louis County. He graduated from Bourbon High School in Bourbon, MO, in 1993. In 1997, he earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, MO. He earned a Master of Business Administration from William Woods University in Fulton, MO, in 2001. Capt. Armistead graduated with Class #364 of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command in 2014. He graduated from Police Leadership -- West Point Model Executive Level training in 2019. Capt. Armistead and his wife, Teri (Froemsdorf), have six children, Savannah, Jack, Natalie, John, Raiden, and Lilly.
