EMPHASIS: Results Of Bi-State Multi-Jurisdictional Aggressive Driving Initiative


Missouri State Highway Patrol Captain Robert L. Powell, commanding officer Troop A, Lee's Summit, and Kansas Highway Patrol Captain Deck Kruger, commanding officer Troop A, Olathe, KS, announce the results of a four-day aggressive driving initiative that targeted hazardous moving violations. Numerous law enforcement agencies from the states of Kansas and Missouri, located around the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan area, worked jointly to combat the continued problem of aggressive driving. Along with officers patrolling the roadways, aircraft from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Kansas Highway Patrol, and the Kansas City (MO) Police Department were utilized to support the road officers. The operations took place on May 6, May 8, May 12, and May 14. The operation was funded by Destination Safe /Missouri Department of Transportation and the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Approximately 40 officers in Missouri and numerous officers in Kansas were assigned to the operation each day. The officer's specifically targeted drivers who were operating their vehicles in a hazardous manner. The following is a breakdown of the violations:

16 Stop Sign Violations
16 Failed To Signal Violations
9 Failed To Yield Violations
12 Careless & Imprudent Driving Violations
123 Seat Belt Violations
9 Child Restraint Violations
488 Non-Hazardous Moving Violations
1 Misdemeanor Resisting Arrest By Eluding
1 Felony Arrest (Resisting Arrest By Eluding)
2 Motorcycles Seized
1 Stolen Auto Recovered


The following agencies were involved in this multi-jurisdictional operation: Missouri State Highway Patrol, Kansas Highway Patrol, Jackson County (MO) Sheriff's Office, Kansas City (MO) Police Department, Johnson County (KS) Sheriff's Office, Gladstone (MO) Police Department, Grandview (MO) Police Department, Independence (MO) Police Department, North Kansas City (MO) Police Department, Olathe (KS) Police Department, Overland Park (KS) Police Department, Parkville (MO) Police Department, Platte County (MO) Sheriff's Office, Platte City (MO) Police Department, and Shawnee (KS) Police Department.

All citizens are urged to report any driver they observe operating a motor vehicle in an unsafe manner. The public can contact the Missouri State Highway Patrol toll free at 1-800-525-5555 or on their cellular phone at *55, and the Kansas Highway Patrol on their cellular phone at *47.

Captain Powell stated, “The Highway Patrol is working diligently to promote safe driving habits by strictly enforcing Missouri’s traffic laws. This operation is an example of the law enforcement community working together to ensure the safe travel of citizens.”
