EMPHASIS: Retirement of Sergeant Roger P. Gosney





Captain John W. Elliott, Commanding Officer of Troop B, Macon, announces that Sergeant Roger P. Gosney retired on August 31, 2003, after serving over 31 years with the Missouri State Highway Patrol.



Sergeant Gosney, a native of Quincy, Illinois, was appointed to the Missouri State Highway Patrol on July 1, 1972. After graduating from the Patrol Academy, he was assigned to Troop C and stationed in Bowling Green, Missouri. On July 15, 1977, he transferred to Troop B and was stationed in Memphis. On September 1, 1981, he was promoted to corporal and was designated the assistant zone commander of the Memphis zone. On March 1, 1986, he was promoted to sergeant and designated the zone commander of the Memphis zone.



Sergeant Gosney assisted with numerous details during his career with the Patrol which include the Missouri State Fair, President Carter detail, University of Missouri football detail, the Brown manhunt in 1987, the 1999 Papal visit to St. Louis, Missouri, two Governor inauguration details, and the Hell’s Angels rally in Branson, Missouri. On May 10, 2003, he received the Patrol’s “Meritorious Service Award” at the annual Missouri State Highway Patrol awards ceremony for his involvement with the rescue of an individual trapped in the Middle Fabius River west of Colony, Missouri.



Prior to his appointment with the Patrol, Sergeant Gosney served 3 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and attended Truman State University (formerly Northeast Missouri State University) in Kirksville, Missouri where he attained a bachelors of science degree in History.



Sergeant Gosney is married to Wanda “Snookie” (Edwards), a native of Bowling Green, Missouri. They have four children: Travis, of Mantecha, California; Kara, of Brashear, Missouri; Allison, of Memphis, Missouri; and Evan, of 29 Palms Marine Corps Base, California. They also have four grandchildren.
