EMPHASIS: Troop D Announces Results Of BWI Sobriety Checkpoint And Enforcement Saturation

Captain Juan Villanueva, commanding officer of Troop D, announces the results of a BWI sobriety checkpoint conducted in Stone County on Table Rock Lake and a water enforcement saturation in Dallas and Laclede counties on the Niangua River on August 4, 2018. The goal of these enforcement operations was to detect impaired boaters and other violations that contribute to boating crashes and drownings. The enforcement locations were selected based on the high number of drinking- and impairment-related boating crashes, illegal drug usage, underage alcohol consumption, and complaints from the public.

The BWI sobriety checkpoint operation was conducted in Stone County, near the Missouri Highway 13 Kimberling City Bridge, on Table Rock Lake. A total of 91 vessels were stopped during the operation. Members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol made the following enforcement contacts:

Boating While Intoxicated Arrests -- 1
Warnings -- 46

The following is a list of enforcement contacts made by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Department of Conservation during the Niangua River saturation:

Total Vessels Contacted -- 159
Total Persons Contacted -- 608
Total Citations -- 39 (Includes: Minor In Possession Of Intoxicants, Possession Of Glass Containers, Littering, No Personal Flotation Device, Misdemeanor Drugs/ Drug Paraphernalia, No Fishing Permit)
Warnings -- 50

“Boating is a fun recreational activity, but safety must be a priority,” said Captain Villanueva. “To ensure the safety for all people on the water, boaters should designate a sober operator for their vessel anytime their plans include alcohol.”

Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others: Share the waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Wear It!! Follow Troop D on Twitter for the most current news @MSHPTrooper|D
