EMPHASIS: Public Invited To Child Identification Program

Members of the media and the public are encouraged to attend a special child identification event on May 26, 2010, at the Missouri State Highway Patrol Safety Education Center, 1510 E. Elm Street, Jefferson City, MO. Parents will be able to bring their child(ren) to the center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. that day to have an identification card made. Parents keep this card, which includes child’s photo, physical description, and fingerprints, in a safe place. The identification card can be given to law enforcement in the event the child is missing or provides photo identification for the family when traveling. There is no charge for the child identification card. For further information about this event please contact Sgt. Keverne L. McCollum or Juvenile and Missing Persons Liaison Heather Elder at the Missing Persons Unit at 573-526-6178.

This special event is being sponsored by the Patrol’s Missing Persons Unit as a way to bring more attention to the plight of the 533 missing children in Missouri. Every year on May 25, Missourians recognize National Missing Children’s Day and remember the children who have been stolen from their families, run away from their families, or have been abandoned by their families. It is the goal of National Missing Children’s Day to bring public attention to the growing problem of missing children.

Parking for the May 26 event will be available in front of the Waggoner Building by the flag pole, or just past the Safety Education Center entrance in the first parking lot on the left. Parents and their children should enter the Waggoner Building through the Safety Education Center entrance on the west side of the building.

“It is our hope that parents will take advantage of this program,” said Sergeant Keverne L. McCollum, supervisor of the Missing Persons Unit. “An identification card is a great tool for parents to keep in the event their child is lost or missing.”

Guests are encouraged to spend time learning about the Patrol and various safety topics while they are at the Safety Education Center.
