EMPHASIS: Sergeant Thomas L. Breen Retires

Colonel Ron Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces the retirement of Sergeant Thomas L. “Tom” Breen effective July 1, 2010. Sgt. Breen retires after 36 years of dedicated service to the people of Missouri.

Prior to being appointed to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Breen served as a police officer and detective with the University of Missouri Police Department in Columbia, MO. Breen was appointed to the Patrol on July 1, 1980, as a member of the 53rd Recruit Class. Upon completing his training at the Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy, he was assigned to Troop E, Zone 5, Portageville, MO. In 1981, he transferred to Troop F, Zone 3, Columbia, MO. He was assigned one of the first Ford Mustangs used by the Patrol in 1988. In July 1989, he transferred to the Division of Drug and Crime Control, General Headquarters, Jefferson City.

Breen was promoted to corporal in 1990, and to sergeant in 1992. While assigned to the Division of Drug and Crime Control, Breen served as a criminal investigator for a number of high profile cases, including the James R. Johnson case, Alis Ben Johns case, and Taum Sauk investigation. He was a member of the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force. Breen also served as an instructor of statement analysis, his area of expertise, for criminal investigation schools held at the Patrol’s Academy. In 2004, he was reassigned to the Organized Crime/Anti-Terrorism (OCAT) Unit as a supervisor. It is from this position that Breen retires.

Breen was born and raised in Brookfield, MO, where he graduated from high school in 1970. He earned a bachelor’s of science degree from Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman University) in 1974. While a member of the Patrol, he attended the Naval Post Graduate School of the Department of Homeland Security in Monterrey, CA, in 2007-2008, in the executive leadership program. Sgt. Breen is married (Diana), has two children: Andrew T. Breen and Lauren R. Breen, and three stepchildren: John Spurgeon, Will Spurgeon, and Sarah Willson.
