EMPHASIS: The Patrol Encourages Drivers To Adjust Driving Habits In Winter Weather

The winter storm upon us serves as a reminder of the power of nature and how it can affect our everyday lives. Whether rain, sleet, ice, or snow, drivers need to make adjustments when the weather changes. Drivers are urged to watch for downed power lines and tree branches. The Missouri State Highway Patrol encourages motorists to plan ahead and drive safely or not at all during bad weather.

Many parts of Southern Missouri are experiencing power outages because of downed power lines. Some railroad crossings may be affected by these outages. When traveling around railroad crossings, motorists should use extra precautions. The lights that warn of approaching trains may not be working properly. Take a little time to look in both directions to make sure there is no train approaching before crossing the tracks. Also, traffic lights may not be working properly. In case the lights are not working, the intersection reverts back to a four-way stop. Again, take a little extra time to make sure there is no traffic present before crossing. Driver courtesy is very important in these driving conditions.

Drivers: Plan extra time into your schedule to clean snow and ice completely from your vehicle. The extra time will help you reach your destination at a slow, safe speed. Make sure the windows are cleared completely to ensure visibility. At least five people have been killed in traffic crashes during this winter storm. Drivers must adjust their speed for the driving conditions and reduced visibility.

Before you travel, gather an ice scraper, tire chains, battery booster cables, blankets, flashlight, and a bag of sand to place in your trunk. Emergencies cannot be predicted, but planning for them can help you if one should arise. Missouri’s Road Condition Report (1-800-222-6400) can help you plan your route--before you leave. This number gives an automated listing of road conditions throughout the state. You may also view MoDOT’s Road Condition Map by going to the Patrol’s web site www.mshp.dps.mo.gov and clicking on the Road Condition icon.

Stopping quickly in the winter on snow-covered or icy roads is next to impossible. Plan ahead by increasing your following distance as you drive. Leave at least five seconds between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Remember: The Missouri State Highway Patrol is here to serve and protect. If you become stranded or see another vehicle stranded on the side of the road with passengers, please call the Missouri State Highway Patrol emergency number at 1-800-525-5555 or dial *55 on a cellular phone. These numbers ring at the nearest troop headquarters.

Planning ahead and being a courteous driver are important every day. In winter driving conditions, this becomes crucial. Please slow down and wear your seat belt.
