EMPHASIS: Colonel Sandra K. Karsten Announces Promotions, Transfers

Colonel Sandra K. Karsten, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces the following promotions effective July 1, 2018:

Lieutenant Benjamin C. Jones, Q/CRD, is being promoted to captain and designated director of the Career Recruitment Division. Captain Jones is a 17-year veteran of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Jones was appointed to the Patrol on January 16, 2001, as a member of the 78th Recruit Class. Upon graduation from the Patrol's Law Enforcement Academy, he was assigned to Troop E, Zone 8/Zone 9 New Madrid and Pemiscot counties On October 24, 2007, he transferred to Troop E, Zone 14, as a commercial vehicle enforcement trooper. He was promoted to corporal on October 1, 2010, and sergeant on September 1, 2014, and remained in his position as a commercial vehicle enforcement trooper. On October 1, 2016, Jones was promoted to lieutenant, transferred to the Career Recruitment Division at General Headquarters in Jefferson City, MO, and designated assistant director of the division.

Capt. Jones grew up in Clarkton, MO, where he graduated from high school in 1991. Capt. Jones and his wife Selene (Torress) have two children, Brianna and Benjamin.

Lieutenant Michael W. Watson, Q/ESB, is being promoted to captain and assigned to the Budget & Procurement Division as the director.

Watson was appointed to the Patrol on January 1, 1992, as a member of the 64th Recruit Class. After graduating from the Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy, he was assigned to Troop D, Zone 5, Jasper County. On July 1, 1997, he was promoted to the rank of corporal and designated assistant zone supervisor of Zone 11, Jasper County. Watson was promoted to sergeant and designated zone supervisor of Zone 5 on May 5, 2002. On April 1, 2008, he transferred to Troop D Headquarters as one of the troop’s public information and education officers. Watson was promoted to lieutenant, transferred to Field Operations Bureau, General Headquarters, Jefferson City, and designated homeland security liaison on May 1, 2015. On September 1, 2017, he transferred to the Executive Services Bureau, General Headquarters, where he served as the Patrol’s legislative liaison.

Captain Watson was born in Fort Leonard Wood, MO. He graduated from Branson Senior High School, in Branson, MO, in 1986. He earned a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice administration from what is now the University of Central Missouri-Warrensburg. Capt. Watson and his wife, Camron (Becker), have two children, Keegan and Katherine Watson.

Captain Joseph L. Armistead, director, is transferring from the Budget & Procurement Division, General Headquarters, Jefferson City, MO, to the Professional Standards Division, General Headquarters. He will serve as the director of the Professional Standards Division.

Armistead joined the Patrol on October 16, 2001, as a member of the 79th Recruit Class. Upon graduating from the Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy, he was assigned to Troop F, Zone 10, Boone County. He was promoted to corporal on May 13, 2007, and designated assistant zone supervisor of Troop F, Zone 3, Boone County. On October 14, 2007, Armistead transferred to the Training Division, General Headquarters, Jefferson City. He was promoted to sergeant on June 1, 2010, and remained assigned to the Training Division. Armistead was promoted to lieutenant and transferred to the Professional Standards Division on April 1, 2015. He was promoted to captain and designated director of the Budget and Procurement Division on October 1, 2017.

Captain Armistead was born in St. Louis County. He graduated from Bourbon High School in Bourbon, MO, in 1993. In 1997, he earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, MO. He earned a Master of Business Administration from William Woods University in Fulton, MO, in 2001. Capt. Armistead graduated with Class #364 of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command in 2014. Capt. Armistead and his wife, Teri (Froemsdorf), have six children, Savannah, Jack, Natalie, John, Raiden, and Lilly.

Captain Corey J. Schoeneberg, Q/PSD, will transfer to the Field Operations Bureau, General Headquarters, Jefferson City, MO, and will serve as an assistant bureau commander.

Schoeneberg was appointed to the Patrol on July 1, 1996, as a member of the 72nd Recruit Class. After graduating from the Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy, his first assignment was to Troop B, Zone 2, Macon and Shelby counties. On January 1, 2001, he transferred to Troop F, Zone 6, Moniteau and Morgan counties. Schoeneberg was promoted to corporal and assigned to Zone 12, Gasconade and Osage counties, on July 1, 2001. He was promoted to sergeant on November 13, 2005, and transferred to Zone 1, Cole and Southern Callaway counties. On June 1, 2011, Schoeneberg was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the Professional Standards Division, General Headquarters, Jefferson City, MO. He was promoted to captain on December 1, 2014, and named director of the same division.

Capt. Schoeneberg was born in Jefferson City, MO. He graduated from California High School, in 1993. He holds a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice from the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, MO. He graduated from the 255th Session of the FBI National Academy Program at Quantico, VA, in 2014. Captain Schoeneberg and his wife, Carey (Scott), have two children: Kathryn and Avery.
