Captain Michael A. Turner, commanding officer of Troop F, Jefferson City, announces the results of a multi-jurisdictional DWI sobriety checkpoint conducted in Boone County. The checkpoint was conducted from 11 p.m. on March 17, 2016, to 3 a.m. on March 18, 2016, on Missouri 163 at Mick Deaver Drive in Boone County and involved the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Boone County Sheriff’s Department, Columbia Police Department, and the MU Police Department.

The STARS database indicates at least 122 alcohol-related traffic crashes occurred in Boone County in calendar year 2015, resulting in 4 fatalities and 56 injuries. A total of 737 vehicles were checked during this operation. Officers made the following enforcement contacts:

16 -- DWI arrests
3 -- Minor in possession of intoxicants summonses
1 -- Driving while suspended/revoked summons
1 -- Non-moving violation summons
1 -- No insurance summons
19 -- Misdemeanor drug arrests
1 -- Felony drug arrest
1 -- Other felony arrest
12 -- Warnings issued

“The sobering fact is that impaired driving contributes to nearly 25 percent of all Missouri fatal crashes." stated Captain Turner. "The Missouri State Highway Patrol is very serious about removing the impaired driver from our roadways. If drinking is a part of your plans, choose a sober designated driver."

Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are NOT at the time of the traffic crash. The Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.
