EMPHASIS: Captain Jerel A. Schomer Retires


Colonel James F. Keathley, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces the following retirement:

Captain Jerel A. Schomer will retire effective March 1, 2010, with more than 29 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Missouri.

Schomer was appointed to the Patrol on January 5, 1981, as a member of the 54th Recruit Class. Upon graduating from the Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy in Jefferson City, MO, he was assigned to Troop H, Zone 5, St. Joseph, MO. In 1990, he was promoted to corporal, and remained in Zone 5, St. Joseph. In 1993, Schomer transferred to the Governor’s Security Division, General Headquarters, Jefferson City. He was promoted to sergeant in 1994. In 1997, Schomer was assigned as the assistant director of the Governor’s Security Division. He was promoted to lieutenant and designated director of that division in 2000. In 2001, he transferred to the Human Resources Division, General Headquarters, Jefferson City, and was designated assistant director. On January 1, 2009, Schomer was promoted to the rank of captain and designated director of the Training Division, General Headquarters, Jefferson City.

Captain Schomer was born in Omaha, NE. He graduated from Tri-Center Community High School in Neola, Iowa. Schomer earned a bachelor’s of science degree in physical education with a minor in psychology from Northwest Missouri State University in 1977. He earned a bachelor’s of science degree in business administration from William Woods University in 1999.

Captain Schomer and his wife, Mary, reside in Lee’s Summit, MO, and have two grown children: Ryan and Kristina.
