EMPHASIS: Troop E Officers To Participate In Operation Lifesaver

On March 20 and 21, 2012, officers from Troop E, Poplar Bluff, will be working with members of the Missouri Operation Lifesaver program in several cities and counties in Southeast Missouri to raise the awareness level for crossing safety and trespass prevention. This will be accomplished by talking with motorists briefly in advance of certain railroad crossings in Stoddard, New Madrid, and Scott counties. Officers will be reminding drivers about railroad safety tips as they approach crossings.

Operation Lifesaver is comprised of local law enforcement officers from the communities involved, Missouri Department of Transportation, Federal Railroad Administration, and Operation Lifesaver volunteers.

The purpose of the program is to help raise awareness of safety at the railroad crossings and along railroad tracks. Over the past two years 11 crossing crashes have occurred in these three counties resulting in three fatalities and eight injuries. In addition, one trespass incident resulted in one fatality during the same time span.
