EMPHASIS: Patrol Investigating Officer Involved Shooting

At approximately 10:30 a.m., March 5, 2014, a Bourbon [MO] police officer attempted to stop a black, Chevrolet Cavalier in Bourbon, after recognizing it matched the description of a vehicle that had previously eluded the Sullivan [MO] Police Department during a pursuit. The vehicle refused to stop and the Bourbon officer initiated a pursuit. The pursuit continued north from Bourbon into Gasconade County, and then south on Missouri Route J, back into Crawford County. The pursuit ended at the intersection of Rt. J and Fann Road, where the vehicle crashed and the officer-involved shooting occurred.
The suspect, Gary Eugene Wenzel, 50, of Bourbon, was fatally wounded. The officer sustained no injuries.
The investigation of the officer-involved shooting is being conducted by the Troop I unit of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control. The investigation is ongoing and an autopsy and coroner's inquest have been scheduled.
