EMPHASIS: Results Of Multi-juridictional DWI Checkpoint Conducted In Clay County

Captain Scott Shipers, commanding officer of Troop A, announces the results of a sobriety checkpoint conducted on Friday evening, June 5, 2015. The checkpoint was a joint effort with the Gladstone Police Department, Platte County Sheriff’s Department, Clay County Sheriff’s Department, and Kansas City Police Department. The checkpoint was held from 11 p.m. on Friday, June 5, to 3 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, and was located at U.S. Highway 169 at the Interstate 29 interchange. The location was determined by past arrests, incidents, and traffic crashes in the county.

A total of 654 vehicles were checked during this four-hour operation, and members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the other agencies involved made the following arrests:

8 -- DWI arrests
1 -- No valid driver’s license
2 -- Misdemeanor drug arrests
3 -- Warrant arrests
21 -- Warnings

Captain Shipers stated, "The focus of law enforcement is to enforce all laws and apprehend violators. The goal of DWI enforcement projects is to deter impaired driving and to make citizens aware that drinking and driving will not be tolerated."

Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are NOT at the time of the traffic crash. The Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.
