EMPHASIS: Patrol Announces Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Program

Captain Norman A. Murphy, acting commanding officer Troop C, Weldon Spring, announces that the Missouri State Highway Patrol has received federal funding from the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program to conduct SAFETE, an enforcement program focusing on violations of commercial motor vehicles. The extra enforcement efforts will be conducted during the month of November and will focus on commercial motor vehicle violations. These extra enforcement efforts will be conducted in the Troop C counties of St. Louis and Jefferson. Aggressive driving by commercial motor vehicles will be targeted and officers will concentrate on detecting violations that contribute to traffic crashes.

Officers will focus their enforcement activities on hazardous operations of commercial motor vehicles that could result in a traffic crash. Preliminary statistics indicate of all 2013 Missouri traffic crashes, almost nine percent involved a commercial motor vehicle. Of all fatal traffic crashes, 12% involved a commercial motor vehicle. A total of 93 persons were killed and 3,399 were injured in commercial motor vehicle crashes.

Captain Murphy stated, “Enforcing commercial motor vehicle violations is critical to the safety of the motoring public. Please assist us in our efforts by reporting careless drivers and other suspicious activities on Missouri’s roadways. You can reach the nearest troop headquarters by dialing 1-800-525-5555 or by dialing *55 on your cellular phone.”

In support of "The Drive To ZERO Highway Deaths," the Patrol encourages motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Watercraft operators should ensure that everyone in the vessel is wearing an approved life jacket. Click It 4 Life And Wear It!!
