EMPHASIS: Troop E To Conduct Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Program

Captain George E. Ridens, commanding officer Troop E, Poplar Bluff, announces that the Missouri State Highway Patrol has received federal funding from the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program to conduct SAFETE, an enforcement program focusing on violations of commercial motor vehicles. The extra enforcement efforts will be conducted during the months of July, August, and September, and will focus on commercial motor vehicle violations. These additional enforcement efforts will be conducted in Cape Girardeau County. Aggressive driving by commercial motor vehicles will be targeted and officers will concentrate on detecting violations that contribute to traffic crashes.

Of all 2010 Missouri traffic crashes, nine percent involved a commercial motor vehicle. Of all fatal traffic crashes, 12.6% involved a commercial motor vehicle. A total of 105 persons were killed and 4,007 were injured in commercial motor vehicle crashes.

Captain Ridens stated, “Enforcement of commercial motor vehicle violations is critical to the safety of the motoring public. Please assist us in our efforts by reporting careless drivers and other suspicious activities on Missouri’s roadways.”

The Missouri State Highway Patrol urges all citizens to report any vehicle they observe operating in a careless manner. The public can contact the Highway Patrol toll-free on the emergency hotline at 1-800-525-5555 or on their cellular phone at *55.
