EMPHASIS: Troop F Announces Results of DWI Sobriety Checkpoint Operation In Boone County

Captain Michael A. Turner, commanding officer of Troop F, Jefferson City, announces the results of a DWI sobriety checkpoint operation conducted in Boone County. The first checkpoint was conducted from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. September 11, 2015, on Missouri Route WW at Rolling Hills Drive. The second checkpoint was conducted from 11 p.m. September 11, 2015, until 3 a.m. September 12, 2015, on Missouri Highway 763 (College Avenue) at Rollins Street. The second checkpoint was a joint operation with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Columbia Police Department, Boone County Sheriff’s Office, and University of Missouri Police Department.

The STARS database indicates at least 153 alcohol-related traffic crashes occurred in Boone County in calendar year 2014, resulting in six fatalities and 65 injuries. A total of 1,388 vehicles were checked during this operation. Members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the other agencies involved made the following enforcement contacts:

15 -- DWI arrests
2 -- No valid driver’s license summonses
6 -- Driving while suspended/revoked summonses
5 -- Misdemeanor drug arrests
1 -- Felony drug arrest
1 -- Other felony violation
18 -- Warnings issued

Captain Turner stated, “The motoring public has been very supportive of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s efforts to make our roads safer through the use of sobriety checkpoints. Nobody wants to share the road with a drunk, drugged, or otherwise unsafe driver.”

Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are NOT at the time of the traffic crash. The Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.
