EMPHASIS: Results Of The Multi-Agency Checkpoint Conducted In Platte & Clay Counties

Captain Scott Shipers, commanding officer of Troop A, Lee’s Summit, announces the results of a DWI sobriety checkpoint conducted on Friday evening, August 21, 2015. The DWI checkpoint was a joint effort with the Northland DWI Task Force which included the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Kansas City [MO] Police Department, Platte County Sheriff’s Office, Gladstone Police Department, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Kearney Police Department, Smithville Police Department, Excelsior Springs Police Department, and Riverside Police Department. The checkpoint was held from 12 a.m. on Friday, August 21, to 4 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2015, and was located at Missouri Highway 152 at Platte Purchase, checking both eastbound and westbound lanes. The location was determined by past arrests, incidents, and traffic crashes in Platte and Clay County.

A total of 914 vehicles were checked during the four-hour operation. Members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the other agencies involved, made the following arrests:

15 -- DWI Arrests (Alcohol)
1 -- DWI Arrest (Drugs)
1 -- Felony drug arrest
3 -- Misdemeanor drug arrests
1 -- Resisting arrest
8 -- Non-moving arrests
3 -- Driving with a suspended license arrests
7 -- Driving without a valid operator’s license arrests

In 2014, 205 people were killed and 3,372 injured in crashes involving and impaired driver. Captain Shipers stated, "Statistics indicate every two hours and 30 minutes someone in Missouri is killed or injured in an alcohol-related crash. The goal of DWI enforcement projects is to deter impaired driving and to make citizens aware that drinking and driving will not be tolerated." To report a suspected intoxicated driver dial 9-1-1 or *55 on a cellular phone.

Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are NOT at the time of the traffic crash. The Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.
