EMPHASIS: LOWA Kayak Event -- Lake Of The Ozarks

Captain Gregory D. Kindle, commanding officer Troop F, Missouri State Highway Patrol, would like to remind boaters to exercise safety and courtesy during the fifth annual “2 Dam Days Paddle Marathon” which will be held on Lake of the Ozarks on Saturday, October 4, 2014, and Sunday, October 5, 2014.

On Saturday, the kayak racing event will begin at the 82.4-mile marker and stop for the evening around 6:30 p.m. at the 34.5-mile marker. The race will resume Sunday morning at 7 a.m. from the 34.5-mile marker and conclude at approximately at 4 p.m. near Bagnell Dam.

In addition to the Lake of the Ozarks Watershed Alliance volunteers, local fire districts, and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, marine operation troopers from the Missouri State Highway Patrol will be monitoring boating traffic to ensure the event is a safe experience for all those involved.

The boating public is asked to consider respectfully that the kayaks involved are under human power and have limited maneuverability. Additionally,

-- These vessels can easily capsize when experiencing boat wakes.

-- A proper speed and distance must be maintained while operating a personal water craft (PWC)
in the area of race participants. A speed and/or distance that may cause danger, injury, damage,
or unnecessary inconvenience is illegal.

-- When operating a power-driven vessel, operators must “give way” to a kayak or other vessels
powered solely by paddles or oars.

In order for this event to be enjoyed by all, each boat operator should practice conscientious, courteous vessel operation, keep a sharp lookout, and maintain a safe speed and distance.

In support of “The Drive To ZERO Highway Deaths,” the Patrol encourages motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Watercraft operators should ensure that everyone in the vessel is wearing an approved life jacket. Click It 4 Life And Wear It!!!
