EMPHASIS: Fatality Truck Crash On Interstate 35

On February 3, 2012, at 1:10 a.m. a northbound tractor trailer crossed the median on Interstate 35, at the 61-mile marker, and struck a southbound tractor trailer head-on. The driver of the northbound tractor trailer died from his injuries. A passing motorist pulled the passenger of the northbound tractor trailer from the truck. The passenger was then flown by Life Net air ambulance to the University of Kansas Medical Center. The driver of the southbound double bottom tractor trailer was taken by ambulance to Cameron Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
Both vehicles burned to their frames and 600 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the ditch along the interstate. Region H hazardous materials personnel are on the scene and the Department of Natural Resources is en route to contain the spill. The southbound lanes of Interstate 35 remain closed until the vehicles are removed.
