EMPHASIS: Patrol Reminds Motorists To Obey Traffic Laws

Colonel James F. Keathley, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, would like to remind motorists to obey all traffic laws. Missouri laws are designed to help keep our roadways safer for everyone. Please take time to review the following law:

Section 304.015 RSMo. states, in part, “Upon all highways any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic thereon shall be driven in the right-hand lane for traffic or as close as practicable to the right-hand edge or curb. All vehicles in motion upon a highway having two or more lanes of traffic proceeding in the same direction shall be driven in the right-hand lane except when overtaking and passing another vehicle or when preparing to make a proper left turn or when otherwise directed by traffic markings, signs or signals.”

As the number of drivers on our roadways increases, the potential for increased aggressive driving incidents is higher. Drivers who habitually travel in the left hand lane can interrupt the flow of traffic and increase the possibility of traffic crashes.

“I would also point out the importance of obeying the speed limit,” said Col. Keathley. “Interstates, highways, routes -- all have speed limits designed for that specific type of roadway. Speed limits are there to protect everyone.”

Speeding is the most common probable contributing circumstance for fatal traffic crashes. Drive safely and courteously, and share the roadway. When in doubt, yield the right-of-way. It’s better to be courteous than to be involved in a traffic crash.
