EMPHASIS: Northeast Missouri Motorists Urged To Be Aware Of Bike Across Missouri (BAM) Event

Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, urges Northeast Missouri motorists to be aware of the presence of several hundred bicyclists who will be traveling on rural roadways as they are participating in the Bike Across Missouri (BAM) event from June 22 through June 26. During the event, participants will travel a pre-determined route across the entire northern portion of Missouri with planned overnight stops in several towns which will offer food and entertainment. The event will start in Rockport, with stops planned in Maryville, Albany, Unionville, Kirksville, and ending in Canton, Missouri.
On the afternoon of June 24, the cyclists will enter the Putnam County area using U.S. Highway 136, and will spend the night in Unionville. On June 25 they will travel to Kirksville using U.S. Highway 136, Missouri Highway 149, and Missouri Highway 6. On June 26, cyclists will travel from Kirksville to Canton where the event will conclude. They will be using Missouri Highway 11, Missouri Highway 15, Missouri Routes W, K, E, and F, and Missouri Highway 16.
During this time period, motorists are encouraged to use extra caution and be alert for bicyclists participating in the event. For further information concerning the event, please visit www.bigbamride.com.
Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are NOT at the time of the traffic crash. The Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.
