EMPHASIS: Troop B Officers Conduct "Trooper On The Train" Enforcement Operation

Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, announced on Tuesday, June 22, 2010, a “Trooper on the Train” enforcement operation was conducted in Macon, Shelby, and Monroe counties, in an effort to reduce the number of railroad grade crossing traffic crashes. During the special operation held in cooperation with the Burlington-Northern Santa Fe Railroad, a trooper was assigned to ride a Burlington-Northern Santa Fe locomotive to observe railroad grade crossing violations, and five troopers and two Monroe City police officers were assigned at crossings in the Clarence, Shelbina, and Monroe City areas. A Patrol aircraft was utilized to assist officers in detecting crossing violations. As a result of the enforcement program, three individuals were issued summonses for railroad crossing violations.
“Railroad crossings can be dangerous if motorists don’t pay attention,” stated Captain Wilt. “We want to encourage drivers to pay extra attention at crossings and know trains always have the right-of-way."
