EMPHASIS: High Water Creates Hazardous Conditions

Captain Mark G. Inman, commanding officer, Troop G, Willow Springs, wants to remind the public to use extreme caution when attempting to cross rain-swollen, low-water crossings. Recent heavy rains have created many hazardous conditions on Troop G roadways. When possible, consider using an alternate route.

One foot of rapidly-flowing water can cause a vehicle to be swept off a bridge or low-water crossing, and a mere six inches of water can sweep a person off their feet.

Captain Inman says, “Please use good common sense when approaching water over the roadway. It is always better to err on the side of caution than to take a chance. Flowing water possesses tremendous power. Please don’t underestimate it.”

Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are NOT at the time of the traffic crash. The Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.
