EMPHASIS: Memorial Highway Dedication Scheduled To Honor Fallen Sergeant David C. May

Captain George E. Ridens, commanding officer of Troop E, Poplar Bluff, invites the public to attend a ceremony to dedicate a portion of U.S. Highway 67 as the “Missouri State Highway Patrol Sergeant David May Memorial Highway.” The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. on Thursday, September 29, 2011, and take place at the Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop E Headquarters, located at 4947 Highway 67 North, Poplar Bluff, Missouri.

This memorial highway recognizes Sergeant David C. May who tragically lost his life in the line of duty in a helicopter crash on May 17, 1999. The fatal crash occurred as Sergeant May was piloting helicopter 77MP in the Poplar Bluff area. Sergeant May was the 19th member of the Missouri State Highway Patrol to lose his life in the line of duty.

House Bill 798 established the “Missouri State Highway Patrol Sergeant David May Memorial Highway” as being on U.S. Highway 67 from County Road 422 to the U.S. Highway 60 East/67 South Bypass in Butler County. The bill was signed by Governor Nixon and became effective on August 28, 2011.
