EMPHASIS: 15th Annual Corporal Michael E. Webster Memorial Blood Drive
Captain Robert L. Powell, commanding officer of Troop A, announces the 15th Annual Corporal Michael E. Webster Memorial Blood Drive. The blood drive will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2008, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the downstairs meeting room at Troop A Headquarters, Lee’s Summit.
The blood drive is an annual event held to raise awareness about the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol. Cpl. Michael E. Webster was killed on October 2, 1993, when a drunk driver struck him while he stood next to a vehicle he had stopped for a traffic violation. The Patrol, along with the Community Blood Center of Kansas City, hosts the blood drive to emphasize the seriousness associated with alcohol-related traffic crashes. Blood is an essential element, which may help to save someone’s life after they have been involved in a traffic crash.
Alcohol was involved in 4.8 of every 100 traffic crashes and 25.3 of all fatal crashes during 2007. Drunk drivers killed 243 persons and injured 4,889 persons in traffic crashes involving alcohol last year.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol and the employees of Troop A would like to invite the public to come by Troop A Headquarters and donate blood. Anyone who would like to donate blood may stop by Troop A Headquarters or call 816-622-0800 and schedule an appointment. Kathey Webster, widow of Cpl. Webster, and their son, Elliott, will be in attendance.
