Captain John W. Elliott, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, announces the results of a special enforcement program “Operation P.R.O.T.E.C.T.”, conducted on October 29, 2008, on U.S. Highway 36, west of Monroe City, Missouri. “Operation P.R.O.T.E.C.T.” (Patrol Response Operation To Enforcement of Construction/work zone Traffic) is an initiative to assess, identify, and prioritize construction/work zones with critical issues or problems affecting highway safety through complaints from the general public, highway/construction workers, law enforcement, and emergency responders. In addition, a ZERO TOLERANCE enforcement policy has been established for the operations as well as routine construction zone enforcement focusing on traffic violations, such as speeding, following too close, other hazardous moving, and commercial motor vehicle violations.
During this four-hour enforcement program, two officers issued eight traffic citations and 10 warnings. Of the citations issued, four were issued for speeding violations, one was issued for a commercial vehicle violation, one was issued for a non-moving violation, and two were issued for license violations.
