EMPHASIS: Troop A To Participate In Positive Enforcement Program In Platte County On October 28, 2013.

Captain Robert L. Powell, commanding officer of Troop A, Lee’s Summit, announces on October 28, 2013, Troop A will be working with other law enforcement agencies and Missouri Operation Lifesaver team members in Platte County to raise the awareness level for railroad crossing safety. This will be accomplished by law enforcement officers and safety personnel visiting with motorists briefly in advance of the Missouri Highway 45 railroad crossing in Platte County. Highway construction is occurring on Missouri Highway 92 and has necessitated rerouting traffic over the Highway 45 spur, which results in traffic backing up over the BNSF Railway crossing. Temporary traffic signals have been installed near the crossing to control traffic and the crossing is equipped with flashing light and gates. Team members will be providing drivers with railroad safety tips and reminding them of the need to use patience and caution as they approach this crossing.

Operation Lifesaver team members will consist of troopers with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Platte County Sheriff’s Department deputies, and representatives from BNSF Railway, Federal Railroad Administration, and Missouri Department of Transportation, as well as Missouri Operation Lifesaver volunteers.

One vehicle train collision has already occurred this year at this crossing injuring two people.

For more information on Operation Lifesaver, contact Rick Mooney, Missouri Operation Lifesaver state coordinator, at 573-634-4113 (office) or 573-230-3284 (cell). For additional information or statistics, please visit the state website at www.ShowMeOL.org or the national website at www.oli.org.
