EMPHASIS: Traffic Stop On Interstate 44 Results In Drug Arrest

On September 6, 2008, a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper stopped the driver of an eastbound Chevrolet Suburban on Interstate 44 in Jasper County for a traffic violation. The stop and subsequent investigation resulted in the seizure of approximately one-half pound of cocaine and the arrest of two individuals.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., the driver of a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban bearing Indiana license plates was stopped near the 29-mile marker for a lane violation. Inconsistencies identified during the traffic stop prompted the trooper to ask for consent to search the vehicle, which was granted. The search revealed approximately one-half pound of cocaine concealed in the rear of the vehicle.

The driver, Anthony L. Powe, 30, East St. Louis, IL, and passenger, Ricardo C. Overton, 31, Cahokia, IL, were arrested for 1st degree drug trafficking.

The charges for which Anthony L. Powe and Ricardo C. Overton were arrested are mere accusations and are not evidence of guilt. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty it is to determine guilt or innocence.
