The special operation was funded by Missouri State Highway Patrol core budget money and a grant through the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Office of Highway Safety. Eight troopers were assigned to 12-hour shifts each night of the operation. Camden County was chosen for the operation due to the high number of fatalities that occur in alcohol-related traffic crashes. In Camden County during the years 2003-2006, 30 percent of all fatal crashes were drinking related. The statewide number for the same time period was 23 percent.
Captain Schmidt stated, “Each time we conduct one of these special operations, the number of intoxicated drivers arrested compared to the total amount of vehicles stopped is staggering. The Patrol is dedicated to making our roadways safer, and this type of enforcement operation obviously helps us meet that goal.”
If anyone observes an impaired driver, please call the Missouri State Highway Patrol Emergency Hotline at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on their cellular phone.
