The special operation was funded by Missouri State Highway Patrol core budget money and a grant through the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Office of Highway Safety. Four troopers were assigned to 12-hour shifts each night of the operation. Camden County was chosen for the operation due to the high number of fatalities that occur in alcohol related traffic crashes. In Camden County during the years 2003-2006, 30 percent of all fatal crashes were drinking related. The statewide number for the same time period was 23 percent.
Captain Schmidt stated, “The intoxicated or impaired driver is the number one concern of Missouri motorists in surveys conducted by the Patrol. During this two-weekend operation, more than one in 10 drivers were arrested for driving while intoxicated. The Patrol is dedicated to making all Missouri highways safe for the motoring public.”
If anyone observes an impaired driver, please call the Missouri State Highway Patrol Emergency Hotline at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on their cellular phone.
