EMPHASIS: Results Of DWI Checkpoint Conducted In Clay County

Captain Robert L. Powell, commanding officer of Troop A, announces the results of a sobriety checkpoint conducted on Saturday evening, June 15, 2013. The checkpoint was a joint effort with the Gladstone Police Department. The checkpoint was held from 11 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, to 4 a.m. on Sunday, June 16, and was located at U.S. 169 at the interchange of Interstate 29. The location was determined by past arrests, incidents, and traffic crashes in the county.

The checkpoint was conducted in the memory of Clifton J. Scott, a 15 year veteran of the Missouri Department of Transportation. Mr. Scott was killed on September 21, 2012, while providing traffic assistance for the Independence Police Department, who was investigating a serious traffic crash on Interstate 70.

A total of 676 cars were checked during this five-hour operation and members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Gladstone Police Department made the following arrests:

14 -- DWI
3 -- Misdemeanor drug arrests
1 -- Drug paraphernalia arrest
1 -- Misdemeanor warrant arrest

Captain Powell stated, "Statistics indicate every two hours and thirty minutes someone in Missouri is killed or injured in an alcohol-related crash. The goal of DWI enforcement projects is to deter impaired driving and to make citizens aware that drinking and driving will not be tolerated." To report a suspected intoxicated driver dial 9-1-1 or *55 on your cell phone.

The Patrol encourages motorists and watercraft operators to protect themselves by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint and everyone in the vessel is wearing an approved life jacket. Click It 4 Life and Wear It!!!
