EMPHASIS: Troop G to Participate in Railroad Safety Activities on Crossing Awareness Day

Captain Dwayne F. Isringhausen, commanding officer of Troop G, Willow Springs, announces on May 7, 2013, Troop G will be working with members of the Missouri Operation Lifesaver program in Howell and Wright counties to raise the education and awareness level for railroad crossing safety and trespass prevention. To accomplish this, law enforcement officers and Operation Lifesaver team members will visit with motorists briefly in advance of certain railroad crossings. Team members will be reminding drivers about railroad safety tips as they approach crossings throughout the counties. Additionally, an Officer on the Train project is being conducted in conjunction with Crossing Awareness Day. The Operation Lifesaver's team members are volunteers who will join troopers with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, officers with the West Plains Police Department and Mountain Grove Police Department, deputies from the Howell County Sheriff's Department and Wright County Sheriff's Department, and representatives from BNSF Railway, Missouri Department of Transportation, and Federal Railroad Administration.

Operation Lifesaver statistics show that over the past two years in the Troop G area, three crossing crashes have occurred resulting in one fatality.
Operation Lifesaver programs and partners across the U.S. also will celebrate International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD, www.ilcad.org/ILCAD-2013) on May 7 with a variety of events to illustrate the importance of safe behavior at grade crossings and around train tracks. This year, 45 countries worldwide are holding events in observance of ILCAD.
