EMPHASIS: Results Of Multi-Jurisdictional DWI Checkpoint In Clay County

Captain Scott Shipers, commanding officer of Troop A, announces the results of a sobriety checkpoint conducted on Friday evening, September 11, 2015. The checkpoint was a joint effort with the Kansas City Police Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol. The checkpoint was held from 11:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11, to 4:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, and was located at U.S. Highway 169 at N.W. Harlem Road. The location was determined by past arrests, incidents, and traffic crashes in the county.

A total of 690 vehicles were checked during this four-hour operation, and members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and Kansas City Police Department made the following arrests:

15 -- DWI arrests
3 -- Driving while revoked arrests
3 -- No operator’s license summonses
2 -- Misdemeanor drug arrests
4 -- Hazardous moving violations
4 -- Non-moving violations
4 -- No insurance summonses

Captain Shipers stated, "The focus of law enforcement is to enforce all laws and apprehend violators. The goal of DWI enforcement projects is to deter impaired driving and to make citizens aware that drinking and driving will not be tolerated."

Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are NOT at the time of the traffic crash. The Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.
