EMPHASIS: Results Of DWI Checkpoint Conducted On Friday, May 8, 2015

Captain Scott A. Shipers, commanding officer of Troop A, announces the results of a sobriety checkpoint conducted from 11 p.m. on Friday, May 8, to 4 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2015. The checkpoint, located at 3719 Independence Avenue, was a joint effort with the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department. The location was determined by past arrests, incidents, and traffic crashes in the county.

A total of 424 vehicles were stopped during this five-hour operation. Members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department made the following arrests:

15 -- DWI arrests
6 -- driver’s license summonses
29 -- non-moving traffic violations
18 -- hazardous moving violations
3 -- misdemeanor drug arrests
1 -- felony drug arrest
11 -- misdemeanor warrant arrests
1 -- minor-in-possession arrest

Captain Shipers stated, "The sobering fact is that impaired driving contributes to nearly 25 percent of all Missouri fatal crashes. The focus of law enforcement is to enforce all laws and apprehend violators. The goal of DWI enforcement projects is to deter impaired driving and to make citizens aware that drinking and driving will not be tolerated."

In 2014, 168 people were killed and 2,622 injured in crashes involving an impaired driver. To report a suspected intoxicated driver dial 9-1-1 or *55 on a cell phone.

In support of "The Drive To ZERO Highway Deaths," the Patrol encourages motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Watercraft operators should ensure that everyone in the vessel is wearing an approved life jacket. Click It 4 Life And Wear It!!
