EMPHASIS: Results Of Multi-juridictional DWI Checkpoint Conducted In Platte County

Captain Scott Shipers, commanding officer of Troop A, Lee’s Summit, announces the results of a sobriety checkpoint conducted on Friday evening, July 17, 2015. The checkpoint was a joint effort with the Kansas City Police Department and Smithville Police Department. The checkpoint was held from 11 p.m. on Friday, July 17, to 3 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, and was located on Missouri Highway 152 at Green Hills Road. The location was determined by past arrests, incidents, and traffic crashes in the county.

A total of 621 vehicles were checked during this four-hour operation. Members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the other agencies involved, made the following arrests:

9 -- DWI arrests
2 -- driver’s license summonses
4 -- misdemeanor drug arrests
1 -- hazardous moving violation
5 -- non-moving traffic violations
26 -- warnings issued

Captain Shipers stated, "The sobering fact is that impaired driving contributes to nearly 25 percent of all Missouri fatal crashes. The focus of law enforcement is to enforce all laws and apprehend violators. The goal of DWI enforcement projects is to deter impaired driving and to make citizens aware that drinking and driving will not be tolerated."

In 2014, 205 people were killed and 3,372 injured in crashes involving an impaired driver. To report a suspected intoxicated driver dial 9-1-1 or *55 on a cell phone.

Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are NOT at the time of the traffic crash. The Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.
