EMPHASIS: Traffic Stop On Interstate 44 Results In Drug Arrest
On July 3, 2008, a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper stopped the driver of an eastbound Chevrolet Highlander on Interstate 44 in Jasper County for a traffic violation. The stop and subsequent investigation resulted in the seizure of approximately three pounds of marijuana and the arrest of two individuals.
At approximately 8:37 a.m., the driver of a 2008 Chevrolet Highlander bearing Missouri license plates was stopped near the 25-mile marker for exceeding the posted speed limit. While speaking with the driver and passenger in the vehicle, the trooper smelled the odor of marijuana emanating from inside the vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed approximately three pounds of marijuana concealed in the rear of the vehicle.
The driver, Clifford A. Hatfield, 22, St. Robert, Missouri, and passenger, Elijah B. Lopez, 26, St. Robert, Missouri, were arrested for possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.
The charges for which Clifford A. Hatfield and Elijah B. Lopez were arrested are mere accusations and are not evidence of guilt. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty it is to determine guilt or innocence.
