EMPHASIS: Troop I Officers Make Drug Seizure On I-44
At approximately 1 p.m., August 18, 2007, Troop I commercial vehicle officers stopped a 1985 Kenworth tractor and trailer unit on eastbound Interstate 44, near the east city limit of St. Robert, in order to conduct a vehicle inspection. Inconsistent statements made by the driver prompted the officers to request a trooper, who then requested a canine, to respond and assist with the vehicle stop. The canine alerted to the load. Further inspection revealed approximately 50 pounds of processed marijuana concealed inside a large coil of copper tubing on the trailer.
The driver of the tractor-trailer unit, James C. Salyers, 46, Mesa, AZ, was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance and felony possession of a controlled substance in a non-prescription container. Salyers was incarcerated in the Pulaski County Jail.
The charges for which Salyers was arrested are mere accusations and are not evidence of guilt. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.
