EMPHASIS: Troop A To Participate In Operation Lifesaver Positive Enforcement Activities

Captain Robert L. Powell, commanding officer of Troop A, Lee’s Summit, announces on April 16 and 17, 2012, Troop A will be working with members of the Missouri Operation Lifesaver program in Jackson, Clay, and Platte counties to raise the awareness level for railroad crossing safety and trespass prevention. This will be accomplished by Operation Lifesaver team members talking with motorists briefly in advance of certain railroad crossings. Team members will be reminding drivers about railroad safety tips as they approach these crossings.
Operation Lifesaver team members will consist of members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, NS Railway, BNSF Railway, local law enforcement agencies, Missouri Department of Transportation, Federal Railroad Administration, and Operation Lifesaver volunteers.
Over the past two years, 11 crossing crashes have occurred in these counties resulting in three fatalities and five injuries. In addition, nine trespass incidents have resulted in four people being injured during the same time period. During 2011, crossing crashes in Missouri increased by 17% with fatalities rising from eight to 13.
