EMPHASIS: MSHP, NASCAR Driver Carl Edwards Emphasize Seat Belt Safety

Colonel Ron Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, is pleased to inform the media a new public service announcement is available on the Patrol's home page. Filmed in partnership with Roush-Fenway NASCAR Driver Carl Edwards, the short message reminds drivers that everyone in their vehicle needs to be properly restrained by a seat belt or child restraint. Mr. Edwards came to the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Emergency Vehicle Operations Course in Jefferson City to record the message.

"We very much appreciate the support we've received from Roush-Fenway Racing and Mr. Edwards," said Colonel Replogle. "When it comes to seat belt safety we all need to make sure everyone in our vehicle is properly restrained."

In 2011, a Missouri driver’s chance of being killed in a traffic crash if they were not wearing a seat belt was 42 times greater than that of a driver who was buckled up. In 2012, of those who were killed in crashes in vehicles requiring seat belt use, 64 percent were unrestrained. The public service announcement can be viewed on the Patrol's Web site. Visit www.mshp.dps.mo.gov and select the "video library" link halfway down the right side of the page. Viewers may download the PSA from that page.

The Patrol encourages motorists to protect themselves from all types of hazardous drivers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Click It 4 Life!

It only takes three seconds to buckle up. Dead is forever.
