EMPHASIS: Traffic Stop In Jasper County Results In Drug Arrest
On October 13, 2008, a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper stopped the driver of an eastbound Toyota Tundra on Interstate 44 in Jasper County for a traffic violation. The stop and subsequent investigation resulted in the seizure of approximately 15 pounds of marijuana and the arrest of one person.
At approximately 11:15 a.m., the driver of a 2005 Toyota Tundra, bearing Indiana temporary registration, was stopped near the 28-mile marker for a lane violation. Inconsistencies identified during the traffic stop prompted the trooper to ask for consent to search the vehicle. The driver granted consent to search the vehicle, then attempted to flee from the trooper into a wooded area south of the interstate. A foot pursuit ensued and the driver was taken into custody by the trooper a short distance from the vehicles. A subsequent search of the Toyota revealed approximately 15 pounds of marijuana in the rear passenger area.
The driver, Tomas Barragan-Mendoza, 36, Springdale, Arkansas, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail, in Carthage, Missouri.
The charges for which Tomas Barragan-Mendoza was arrested are mere accusations and are not evidence of guilt. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty it is to determine guilt or innocence.
