The enforcement operations included All American Buckle-Up Week and Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort).
During the Memorial Day Weekend accident-counting period, which began at 6 p.m., May 23, 2008, and ended at 11:59 p.m., May 26, 2008, Troop A officers investigated 46 traffic crashes, which resulted in one fatality and 21 injuries. Troop A officers made 30 arrests for driving while intoxicated, issued 274 speeding citations, 137 seat belt summonses, and 11 citations for failure to properly secure a child in an approved child restraint seat, and assisted 261 motorists.
During the period covering May 19, 2008 through May 26, 2008, the Patrol participated in the “All American Buckle Up” campaign. As a result of the campaign, Troop A officers issued 286 seat belt summonses and 15 citations for failure to properly secure a child in an approved child restraint seat.
Lieutenant Powell stated, “Every time you get into a vehicle, you’re at risk of being involved in a traffic crash. Take the time to make sure you and your loved ones are secured in a properly adjusted and fastened safety belt or child restraint appropriate for your child, each and every time you drive.”
