EMPHASIS: Driving With Caution -- Winter Storm Warning

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is encouraging all motorists to plan ahead and drive safely or not at all due to the winter storm warning for Northwest Missouri covering tonight and tomorrow morning.

Drivers are encouraged to take the time to clean snow and ice completely from their vehicles. Missouri law states if you are using your windshield wipers, your headlights must be turned on. Missouri law also states headlights are required âfrom a half-hour after sunset to a half-hour before sunrise and at any time when there is not sufficient light to render clearly discernible persons and vehicles on the highway at a distance of 500 feet ahead.â With your headlights on you are more visible to other drivers, which could prevent a traffic crash.

Emergencies cannot be predicted, but planning for them can help you if one should arise. Before you travel, make sure your car has been winterized and you have an ice scraper, tire chains, flashlight, battery booster cables, blankets, and a bag of sand placed in your trunk. Before you leave your house, the Missouri Road Condition Report (1-800-222-6400) can help you plan your route. This number gives an automated listing of road conditions throughout the state.

When the inclement weather hits, please adjust how you drive to reach your destination safely. Slow down when driving on snow or on ice, and increase the following distance between you and other vehicles. Drivers have a responsibility to âexercise the highest degree of care.â

If you become stranded or see another vehicle stranded on the side of the road with passengers, please call the Missouri State Highway Patrol emergency number at 1-800-525-5555 or dial *55 on a cellular phone.

Captain Robinson, commanding officer of Troop H, stated, âAll motorists should plan ahead and be courteous drivers, especially in winter driving conditions. Please slow down, pay attention, and make sure you and all your passengers are properly restrained in a seat belt or a child restraint. Click It 4 Life.â
