EMPHASIS: Results Of Multi-jurisdictional DWI Checkpoint Conducted In Jackson County

Captain Scott Shipers, commanding officer of Troop A, announces the results of a sobriety checkpoint conducted on Friday evening, August 28, 2015. The checkpoint was a joint effort with Kansas City Police Department and Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. The checkpoint was held from 11 p.m. on Friday, August 28, to 4 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, and was located on Southwest Trafficway at 39th Terrace. The location was determined by past arrests, incidents, and traffic crashes in the county.

A total of 950 vehicles were checked during this five-hour operation, and members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the other agencies involved made the following arrests:

29 -- DWI arrests
6 -- driver’s license summonses
4 -- misdemeanor drug arrests
14 -- hazardous moving violations
44 -- non-moving traffic violations
63 -- warnings issued
1 -- resisting arrest

Captain Shipers stated, "The sobering fact is that impaired driving contributes to nearly 25 percent of all Missouri fatal crashes. The focus of law enforcement is to enforce all laws and apprehend violators. The goal of DWI enforcement projects is to deter impaired driving and to make citizens aware that drinking and driving will not be tolerated."

In 2014, 205 people were killed and 3,372 injured in crashes involving an impaired driver. To report a suspected intoxicated driver dial 9-1-1 or *55 on a cell phone.

Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are NOT at the time of the traffic crash. The Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.
